Its been7 mos and my stroke victim husband has been thru the ringer as well as myself. I am handling this whole thing alone - alone - alone. We have no children, nor any family nearby. Talk about stress. He’s improved some - looks great, is mobile but the language thing is unbearable, all the testing done on language has netted a zero. He is starting to answer me occasionally with 2-3 simple replies that I understand. I have been in such a turmoil that I recently started therapy, go to a caregivers meeting once a month. He’s 60 years old and never got to see retirement. Oh, and he was such a smart guy, could fix anything, loved technical stuff etc etc. I am devastated about his condition now that he cannot speak, read or write (and loved all that). Anyone else like this out there? Would love to hear how you handled some of this!

Jennie,

Please read through the Section on Resources on our web site Aphasia Hope Foundation because I believe there are stories in that section which will give you hope and also your husband hope.
These stories are very similar to what you are facing and how others have coped and also ways you can work with helping your husban with his reading, etc.

I was in your place in 1995—my husband was 55—now he drives and can get most of his thoughts out so that he can communicate.

Don’t give up—he can get better—it just takes hard, hard work.

Judi

Thank you Judi for the kind words, I did go and read some experiences in Resouces. I am really scared of the future - right now things seem probably worse than they are. I’m not even sure he knows of his aphasia/disability. I am going to have to ask the doctor to explain to him. Today was a bad day and hes very agitated, makes me crazy & sad to see those kind of days. I am so glad your husband got better - see there is hope! Take care and thanks again …

Hi Jennie - My husband also had a stroke last Jan. 21st while I was in San Diego, CA and he was in the Philippines. I had to rush back home to take care of him. This is the heaviest cross I had to carry in my 58 years of existence. He is so grumpy and doesn’t even lift a finger to practice with me so he can be understood. He has Wenicke Aphasia. We don’t have enough Speech Pathologist in Manila so it is difficult to have him treated for his speech impairment. However, my faith in God is deep so I live one day at a time and I make the most of what I can do to help him recover. Just hang on to God and let go of your fears. Try to have a life too. Ask some help from friends and neighbors to baby sit him once in a while so you can take a breather. You need to take care of yourself to be able to take care of him. Surrender all your burdens to God and don’t be a control freak. This is how we can survive the crisis. God loves you.

Jennie—I read your early posting about your husband’s aphasia. We are nearly at the 7 month mark post stroke and I too am going insane with his inability to communicate.
As of today he is refusing to return to the fabulous rehab center he has been going to and wants me to do rehab at home. I am beside myself and hope you could let me know how your husband is doing now so maybe I’ll feel a bit less anxious.
My husband is also 60. He is walking with a cane short distances, but still has limited use of his right hand. Thanks for your help.
