Re: Speech aphasia
Posted at: 2022-02-08 11:04:39
Cindi,

You need to talk to Medicare and see if you still qualify for Speech therapy. If not, you can ask your doctor if he knows about a Speech group (aphasia) in there area. You can also go on ASHA.com and click on your city to see if they have one listed.

You can also ask your speech pathologist to recommend exercises for you. You would need someone to help you — a family member or friend.

Hope this helps.

Re: ok, hi jennie, you still around?

Jennie,

Hope you are doing better. You need to take care of your own health or you can not be the Caregiver that you would like to be. Please ask other family members, or friends to come which will allow you to get out and re-group on your role as Caregiver.

Do not feel guillty when you take a break.

You might have your doctor to tell your husband that he needs to take the Rehab driving school. They will test his reflexes; give him a written driving test (like the regular driving test); then he will have to drive with an instructor until or if they think that he is able to go the Driving Department to take his regular driving test.

Hope this helps.

Re: playing BINGO

Donna,

Donna, I believe that the only way for her to play Bingo will to have a helper. Ask someone who enjoys playing to help—one of the aides or a friend to come once a week to help—maybe a church friend.

Hope this works.

Re: need to address aphasia globally

Victor,

I certainly agree with you. This is one of the reasons we started Aphasia Hope to educate the World about aphasia and what it means to “All” concerned. We also wanted them to know that they could have HOPE —no magic pill, but with hard work you can get better and live a quality life!!!

I had a hard time understanding your e-mail. Sounds like you need couseloring with your Mom and Dad. Ask her primary doctor to recommend one. Also, if she has not had Speech Therapy she needs to evaluated.

Please get some professional advice.

Re: 7 years of aphasia

Kit,

Have you had her with a speech therapist? She might be able to help her “understand that she is not saying real words” instead of family member.

Would she be interested in drawing pictures for what she is trying to say? There are picture charts that express normal needs—drink of water, etc. that might help with some of the frustration.

Also maybe show her that you are recording her “talk” and then play it back for her to hear the words that you are hearing.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the great survey.

I hope many survivors of Aphasia will take the time to help you on your survey.

Would you let us know the results on the Survey and we will report them on this site.
